S. Korea’s number of beef cattle, pigs down in Q3

SEOUL, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) — The number of beef cattle and pigs raised in South Korea went down in the third quarter, with the number of layer chickens and ducks growing, statistical office data showed Friday.
Domestic farms bred 3,541,000 beef cattle in the July-September quarter, down 5.6 percent compared to the same quarter of last year, according to Statistics Korea.
The number of milk cows reared in the country shrank 1.8 percent to 379,000, and the figure for pigs fell 1.9 percent to 11,182,000.
The reading for broiler chickens slipped 4.6 percent over the year to 85,737,000 in the third quarter, but the number of layer chickens and ducks gained in single digits to 80,545,000 and 9,241,000 each. ■
